Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I begin taking Junior level HIM courses (HIM 321, 323, 401 and 461) prior to taking HIM 101 and HIM 361?

Although not ideal, a student can take HIM 101 at the same time as the Junior level HIM courses. However, a student MUST complete HIM 361 with a grade of C or better in order to enroll for the Junior level HIM courses.

  • What courses are accepted for the Elective courses in the HIM curriculum?

Browse to http://him.louisiana.edu/curriculum.shtml and look under the heading Additional Notes to find acceptable Elective courses.

  • What is the HIM Repeat Rule?

After 3 unsuccessful registrations (any grade other than A, B, or C, including W) in HIM courses (the same or different courses), a student will not be allowed to continue in the HIM program at UL Lafayette. This policy applies to enrollment in HIM classes beginning with the Fall 2001 semester. This policy will also apply to transfer work. Examples of the Repeat Rule:

    Example #1: HIM 101 - W; HIM 321 - D; HIM 322 - W

    Example #2: HIM 361 - W; HIM 361 - W; HIM 361 - W

A student may request an exception/appeal to this policy on the basis of documented extenuating circumstances.

  • I am interested in just taking the coding courses taught at UL Lafayette. Is this possible?

Due to the sequencing of courses (specifically the Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Science, and Medical Terminology) to properly prepare a student for the coding courses, each student's situation will be unique. Please contact the HIM department directly to speak with an academic advisor.

  • Do I have to arrange for my own clinical experience and internship sites?

The clinical experience and internship coordinators arrange all clinical and internship experiences. The coordinators will meet with the junior HIM students in the spring semester prior to the start of their senior year to begin planning of these activities.
